She employed the skills of highly regarded winemaker Riccardo Cotarella and they have created an outstanding icon wine they decided to name Montevetrano. Montevetrano is a small zone in the hills near the commune of San Cipriano Picentino, not far from Salerno. Mountains surround the property, with the vineyards situated on gentle slopes facing south by southwest. The heart of the estate is a beautiful, ancient villa. In the first years of production the basement of the villa also served as the cellar. Now the wine is made and stored in a new modern cellar, built in 2000. Silvia and her friends use the old cellar for private vintages. Within a very short period of time her work with Cotarella has produced an absolute jewel in this location. Between the end of September and the start of October, Montevetrano first harvests the Merlot grape, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon and finally the Aglianico. Fermentation initially occurs in steel vats for about 15 days, after which the wine is transferred to new barrels for 10-12 months. The process is traditional but also strictly controlled, guaranteeing proper refinement and a balanced maturation. The process also ensures the grapes retain the regional features typical of Montevetrano. Cotarella is particularly proud of this wine, being the very first icon wine he has made; he considers it the father of his reds.

Producer Description:

Containing the largest Grand Cru in all of the Côte d’Or, Vougeot, the village, takes its name from the small stream flowing through it, called Vouge. Its mass—over 50 ha—retains the single name chiefly for historic reasons.

But today, Clos de Vougeot contains over 80 owners and shows significant soil and slope variations within its boundaries. The soothingly sustained finish is seductive in its sheer fruitiness, to which is added a hint of almond paste, all of this well supported by modest sweetness from 57 grams of residual sugar ? a modesty that also permits some genuine refreshment as well a revelation of stony underpinnings. Among overtly sweet Kesselstatt 2018s, this is the most striking example of Mertes determination to let alcohol rise so as to moderate residual sugar, especially in a low-acid vintage, because here we have 10% alcohol. Unsurprisingly, no price is paid in terms of levity ? a Riesling of 10% alcohol is still eminently buoyant ? so what?s the downside? And why don?t more vintners follow Mertes? lead ? in general, and not just in low-acid vintages? Why do contemporary Sp?tlesen have to taste so very sweet? ?I guess that makes them more impressive to professional tasters,? volunteered Mertes sagely, ?but I think that?s also the reason that so little Sp?tlese actually gets drunk,? which he and I both think is a problem and a real shame. The 2018 vintage across South Australia (and cheekily, we could probably extend the accolade to all of Australia) was excellent. It was warm, but without incident, and responsible for powerfully ripe, serious wines. Many producers made some of their best wines in this vintage. So here, to the 2018 Grange: there is spiced raspberry, lashings of salted licorice, red curry paste, layers of forest berries, rendered lamb fat and crushed pink peppercorns to start. In the mouth, the tannins close around the fruit with the same polish and seamlessness as the 2008, possibly the 2004? Very different vintages, but there is a textural similarity for me. This is polished and glossy and so very pretty. It contains 3% Cabernet Sauvignon this year, and 69% Barossa, 18% McLaren Vale and the balance from Clare Valley. Each of the regions brings with it its own characteristics. Barossa brings the red dirt, blood, deli meat and rust. McLaren Vale brings the plush purple fruits with a side of meat and licorice. Clare brings the polish, the opulence and the velvet texture. With their powers combined, this is an extraordinary Grange. With a little coaxing, the fireworks really begin, letting off a whole array of honeysuckle, candied ginger, dried pineapple, lemon pastilles, chalk dust and sea spray scents, followed by a savory undercurrent of shaved almonds, allspice and baking bread. The palate is an exercise in polish and poise, featuring the most gorgeously creamy texture and bright, sparkling freshness, framing all the densely laden tropical and citrus fruit layers, finishing with a powerful BANG of profound floral and spice perfume. It is wonderfully sweet, yes, but that?paradoxically for a "sweet wine"?is almost beside the point. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (October 20), October 2020

Decanter: 97 Points

Average temperatures 2.7?C over average, combined with 20% of the normal rainfall from mid August to the end of July made makes this a naturally rich, low-yielding vintage (40% less than average, not helped by a hail storm in July), with a gloriously gourmet 145g/ha residual sugar, and a pH level of 3.95. As ever with Yquem, patience was the key, taking in the grapes slowly but surely over 17 days harvest that extended well into October. The results in the glass are intense and glossy, full of satin-textured apricot and white peach flavours. There are exotic fruits of pineapple and mango but winemaker Sandrine Garbay has kept a focus on fresher flavours of lime zest and citrus that balance out the natural richness and concentration. The wine opens with an intense and ultra concentrated but still vinous and not overly fruity bouquet with pencil point notes on the first nose that slowly reveals concentrated, syrupy apricot and roasted bacon-rind notes. Enormously viscous on the palate but at the same time so finessed, vital and balanced that the wine never weighs heavily and is not even sticky, this is an exceptional QDC, of which just one barrel was produced. This 2018 is made for eternity and belongs to the finest noble sweet wines I have ever had. Even though I am so much in love with the Les Quarts twin, I have to admit that here comes not only an even sweeter Quarts-de-Chaume but also an even more concentrated and finessed one. The aging capacity is ideal, and due to its balance, I don't see any doubts the wine can age 100 and more years. What a start for Domaine Belargus! 9% alcohol. In 2008, S?bastien invested in the domaine?s first sorting table and the quality again was reflected in beautifully balanced wines that year. He has since added a second sorting table and now the harvest sees the two tables in action with a dozen people meticulously sorting each bunch and berry to ensure only the top quality fruit makes the grade. While there are no Grand cru vineyards within Beaune, there are several well-known and highly regarded Premier cru vineyards, including some that are owned by the large négociant houses in Beaune and produce some of their "flagship" wines at the Premier cru level. The AOC was created in 1936.

In 2008, there was 411.7 hectares (1,017 acres) of vineyard surface in production for Beaune wine at village and Premier cru level, making Beaune the largest village-named appellation of the Côte d'Or, just ahead of Gevrey-Chambertin AOC in vineyard size. A total of 15,652 hectoliters of wine were produced in 2008, of which 13,319 hectoliters were red wine and 2,333 hectoliters white wine. Some 357.06 hectares (882.3 acres) of this area was used for the red wines in 2007. The total amount produced corresponds to almost 2.1 million bottles, which included almost 1.8 million bottles of red wine and a little over 300,000 bottles of white wine.

For white wines, the AOC regulations allow both Chardonnay and Pinot blanc to be used, but most wines are 100% Chardonnay. The AOC regulations also allow up to 15 percent total of Chardonnay, Pinot blanc and Pinot gris as accessory grapes in the red wines, but this is not practiced very often. The allowed base yield is 40 hectoliters per hectare of red wine and 45 hectoliters per hectare for white wine. The grapes must reach a maturity of at least 10.5 percent potential alcohol for village-level red wine, 11.0 percent for village-level white wine and Premier Cru red wine, and 11.5 percent for Premier cru white wine.

Beaune is also the center of the Burgundy wine business, with most of the largest négociants located in the town, as well as the Hospices de Beaune , which annually holds a charity wine auction.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/15658-michel-gay-beaune-coucherias-blanc-1er-cru_1.jpg?v=1789056389
baricci-brunello-di-montalcino-montosoli-2018-750ml
Baricci Brunello Di Montalcino Montosoli 2018 750ML

Kerin O'Keefe: 97 Points

Spicy aromas reveal pipe tobacco, underbrush, new leather and ripe berry alongside whiffs of fragrant purple flower. In 1980, at the age of 19, Vincent Girardin, the son of a family of winegrowers based in Santenay since the 17th century, decided to strike out on his own and began producing wine from five acres of vines that he had inherited from his parents. From his earliest youth, Vincent had a passion for working with vines and great respect for the potential that they represent, and his ambition was to produce his own wine. The quality of his wines was quickly recognized by connoisseurs all over the world, and this enabled him to expand his activity, focusing primarily on the great white and red wines of the Côte de Beaune. To cope with the growing demand for his wines, he developed an approach that was new in Burgundy: he purchased grapes from producers who shared the same philosophy and the same high standards. In 2012, Vincent Girardin sold his operation to a long-standing partner of the Maison. Jean-Pierre Nié, President of the Compagnie des Vins d’Autrefois in Beaune, naturally decided to continue with the small team of nine people that had been faithful to the Maison for many years. In 2014, Jacques Puffeney announced he would be retiring and that Guillaume would be taking over 4 hectares of his vineyards.

Within a short of period of time, Guillaume and his team in the Jura, led by Fran?ois Duvivier, have adopted a Jurassic sensibility and are poised to do great things.

Producer

Domaine Du Pelican

Country

France

Region

Jura

Subregion

Arbois

Varietal

Chardonnay

Vintage

2018

Sku

17474

Size

750ml

Jeb Dunnuck: 93 Points

The 2018 Champagne Cuv?e Ephem?re Extra Brut is entirely Chardonnay coming from the Grand Cru villages of Oger, Avize, and Cramant. What's more, they resolved to create a wine with a style all its own: not another hard, tannic red wine requiring years of aging to enjoy, but a wine of fully developed flavors and a velvety soft texture on the day it is released for sale.

Silver Oak produces Cabernet Sauvignon from two appellations. Their Napa Valley derives its fruit from both owned and contracted vineyards, and is produced entirely at their Oakville winery. Beginning in 1994, small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have been included in their Napa blend to add complexity and softness.

Silver Oak also produces stellar Cabernet from their Alexander Valley vineyards. A critical reason for the success of this wine, and every wine they make, has always been that they create the final blend before aging it in American oak barrels and then bottles. Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the wine’s flavors, aromas, and textures have an opportunity to meld with one another and the wood’s delicate qualities to create the kind of graceful cohesion found only in the world's most elegant wines.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/17833-silver-oak-cabernet-sauvignon-napa-valley_1.jpg?v=1789056324
schloss-lieser-auslese-gka-juffer-sonnen-2018-375ml
Schloss Lieser Riesling Auslese Juffer Sonnenuhr Goldkapsel 375ML 2018

Producer

Schloss Lieser

Country

Germany

Region

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer

Varietal

Riesling

Vintage

2018

Sku

17852

Size

375ml

Wonderful aromas of wild herbs as well as mineral notes show the Riesling abbey in the nose and on the palate.

Grapes The Wine Company
Default Sweet, perfumed and compelling, the 2018 is captivating right out of the gate. It possesses striking inner perfume and tons of charm. In 2018, Castello di Verduno made the unusual decision to bottle this wine as a non-Riserva, but this is the estate Monvigliero, not to be confused with the non-estate, non-Riserva bottling introduced with the 2019 vintage. To be sure, tasted next to the 2019 and 2017 Riservas, the 2018 is a bit lacking in depth and structure, but that in no way detracts from the immense pleasure it provides. Savvy buyers will want to snap up the 2018, as it is a superb wine for the money. The 2018 is pure and total sensuality. - Antonio Galloni

Producer

Castello di Verduno

Country

Italy

Region

Piedmont

Subregion

Barolo

Varietal

Nebbiolo

Vintage

2018

Sku

22661

Size

750ml
