What started as a one month internship, turned into what has now become one of the more exciting Chablis producers in many years. After less than 3 weeks working with him, Olivier Leflaive recognized the talent the young Piuze had and offered him the opportunity of a lifetime by asking Patrick if he wanted to head up the new winery in Chablis he was building. For 4 years Patrick made the Chablis of Leflaive, then for 1 year he produced the Chablis at Verget, and finally he was winemaker at Jean‐Marc Brocard for 3 years. With so much knowledge and experience in the appellation it was time for Patrick to go off on his own, which he did beginning with the 2008 vintage.

Perhaps being an outsider has caused Patrick to view the traditions and the terroirs of Chablis with an even greater sense of reverence than one typically finds in a young winemaker. This reverence means that when he set out, he decided he only wished to work with vines planted in the original appellation of Chablis, which has expanded more than 6 times its original size from around 1,000 hectares to over6,000 today. As Patrick likes to say “I think the monks got it right”. After many years of working with so many terroirs in Chablis, Patrick has developed not only a great knowledge of the appellation’s vineyards, but also great relationships with many of its best growers. Through this network Patrick sources some of the top sites in Chablis including six 1er Crus and six of the seven Grand Crus.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/white_f6fa1224-f424-4828-bc57-852e9b7d5d0b.jpg?v=1789021524
emrich-schonleber-fruhlingsplatzchen-gg-2021-750ml
Emrich-schonleber Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs 750ML 2021

Producer Description:

For any serious German buyer, whether collector or Riesling dork, the wines of Emrich-Schönleber belong in the cellar directly next to Keller or Schäfer-Fröhlich or Lauer. Complete and penetrating, it's a true classic, reminiscent of a modern-day version of Ducru's brilliant 1996?though today's precision winemaking means that the 2021 is unlikely to go through so long a hibernation as that vintage. - William Kelley

Producer

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou

Country

France

Region

Bordeaux

Subregion

Saint Julien

Varietal

Bordeaux Blend

Vintage

2021

Sku

15354

Size

750ml

Vinous: 98 Points

"The 2021 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is very possibly the wine of the vintage. Vertical and explosive, the 2021 possesses mind-blowing intensity and dynamic energy to burn. The 2021 is a heady, racy wine that captivates all the senses. Tobacco, mocha, cedar, leather, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and plum saturate the palate in a wine that dazzles from start to finish. This has an instant presence in the mouth, fully flavoured and juicy but so balanced, nothing sticking out, with the elegance of the ripe cool fruit touching the sides of the mouth. Tannins are present but fine and gently grippy with detail and definition to them. This has a lot of life for the vintage, one of the more full, round wines with chewy, fleshy tannins. The Cabernet gives backbone and density, the Merlot ripe red fruits, and then the chalky, slate, pencil lead, graphite salinity of the terroir comes in on the finish, giving that nuance, the sense of place and the vintage. Great rise and persistence all the way through, such drive but also lift, it doesn't let up. A stand-out wine - extremely classy and memorable. Skilled winemaking on show from Guillaume Pouthier. 5% more tannins than in 2020 which was already high. Grapes were picked at a natural alcohol of 14.2% so no chaptalisation here. 3.6pH. 45% whole bunches. Thus the mystery, the beauty and yes, all the damn fuss. At this point it’s said so often it’s beyond trite, but here we go: If you appreciate Burgundy these wines are worth checking out. Not because they taste like Burgundy, they don’t, but because they share a similar aesthetic of lightness matched to intensity, filtered through soil.

Depending on the vintage, the estate can make up to four “Grand Crus.” First, there are the two terroir-specific Pinots: a wine from limestone called “Muschelkalk” and a bottling from colored sandstone called “Buntsandstein.” Then, there is a tiny colored sandstone parcel they took over from this older lady named Ida; the barrels always had a unique quality to them, so when they can, they will bottle a “Buntsandstein Ida,” honoring this small parcel. Finally, if the vintage allows, they may bottle a “Pinot a Trois,” which is nothing more (or less) than the top grapes from all three sites. In 2018 they made good quantities of all of these wines; in 2019 they could only make the Grand Cru “Muschelkalk.” So it goes.

Producer Description:

In Germany many insiders consider Enderle & Moll the country’s single greatest producer of Pinot Noir. That’s a wild claim to be sure, but then you taste the wines and you think to yourself, “…yeah, alright, well maybe…”

The wines are that compelling.

What you can say with certainty is that Florian Moll, along with his partner Géraldine, Manfred Enderle and Frenchman Maxence Lecat, fly in the face of just about every conventional estate in Baden.

Sure, the landscape has changed a lot in the last 15 years, with producers like Hendrik Möbitz, Shelter and Wasenhaus. But when they started in 2007, what they were doing was for all intents and purposes blasphemy. Truly, it’s hard to emphasize how contrarian (and even confrontational) their vineyard and cellar work appeared to the powerful coops of the region, to say nothing of the “famous” estates who at the time were busy pursuing efficiency, ripeness, size, alcohol and, yes, new oak, with abandon.

From the beginning, the focus here was not on ripeness, but on the age and quality of the vineyard. They work with very old vines. In fact their vines are among the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Baden. They farm all the vineyards organically and biodynamically. Absolutely everything is done by hand in the vineyards and in the cellar. They were among the first to actually request used barrels, seeking a more delicate élevage. Although every winery in Germany now claims to somehow have a DRC barrel or two, Enderle & Moll were among the first to realize that the provenance of the barrels mattered, a lot, and they began, famously, with used Dujac barrels, though of course now they source barrels from around Burgundy. It comes from a plot located in Saint-Christophe des Bardes, on a limestone soil , in the heart of the Saint-Emilion appellation. Grown from 75 year old vines. Today we own the only existing white Merlot vines of the appellation. This blend is vinified and matured in slightly toasted new oak barrels from the Center- France region. Our barrels are 300 liters and shaped like cigars.

This wine is distinguished by its singularity, but above all by the floral notes that emerge on the first nose, beautiful bitterness, and a salinity. This is specific to the great limestone soils where the very best French whites are produced.

Although it comes from the Saint-Emilion appellation, we have decided to produce it as a “vin de table”.

We produce about 2000 bottles of the Blanc du Château Vieux Taillefer every year.

Producer Description:

"Barbara Öhlzelt is turning the region’s paradigm completely on its head. Born and raised in the villages of Pouilly-Fumé, as a young adult Antoine chose to embark on a decade of backpacking around the world. Traipsing through America, Argentina, Africa, and even the Middle East he learnt new methods and ways of life outside of the borders of France. In America he began with learning all about the three-tier system from various wine importers, then his time in Argentina was spent with Michel Rolland and his right-hand-man Thierry Haberer of Clos de los Siete wine estate. Once arriving in South Africa Antoine worked and learned from Duncan Savage, and as a sweet surprise it was where he met Ilse Nel, his now wife.

This led to a massive shake up once returning home to France and taking over from the Kerbiquet family at Domaine du Bouchet. Instantly making his mark Antoine set about planting new vines, renovating the cellar, purchasing new equipment and amphorae. He also began experimenting with old oak barrels with his wines.

The domaine has been biodynamically certified since 2009, allowing Antoine to step into a vineyard that shares his beliefs already. Being the first domaine to be certified Organic in the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, Antoine continued to push biodiversity and the correlation to the Lunar calendar to achieve Biodynamic certification soon after he took over. With the help of his mentor and expert in biodynamics, Pascal Kerbiquet, he continues to champion the thriving nature in his vineyards.

The vines are all planted to Sauvignon Blanc and sit on the south-west slope of the hill next to the village of Saint Andelain. Since 1874, 6 generations have succeeded at Domaine Santa Duc and have succeeded in raising it to the rank of the greatest Santa Duc Gigondas even though it was already known for its red wines since the Gallo-Roman era. In 1985, Yves Gras took over the torch of his father Edmond and made wines known internationally. He also buys plots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to diversify its terroir. Benjamin later took over the direction of Domaine Santa Duc. The work of the Gras family is now recognised worldwide.

The keyword is the RESPECT that guides Yves Gras’s decisions in Santa Duc. He sees the plant as a living being in balance with its environment: Biodiversity, Biological and Biodynamics are required to develop Santa Duc Gigondas. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault grape varieties are grown on two soil types, maintaining biodiversity through organic farming. The intervention is minimal to make Santa Duc wines, bottling is done without filtration, the harvest is whole and fermentation is carried out with native yeasts.

The wines of Santa Duc are renamed, especially those in the Gigondas appellation, such as the Cuvée Tradition, as well as the appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But this Domaine also expresses its know-how through other appellations such as Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône, Rasteau, Vin de Pays du Vaucluse. Domaine Santa Duc produces red wines of character. The bride’s dowry included parcels in some of Burgundy's top grand cru vineyards, which Joseph then added to, parcel by parcel, through the years.

Their son, Herve, assumed the reins of the estate in 1983.
