It comes in with 111 grams of residual sugar. This is a very elegant Dow's, but there is certainly both power and concentration lurking underneath. Adding fine fruit, it is expressive and sophisticated, a very refined offering that seems not quite as burly as in some years. It is still exceptionally appealing, but it was curiously understated when seen. Some bottle shock, perhaps? The fresh 2016 Vintage? This is an illustration of Charles Symington's philosophy, as relayed to me, that the ""wines should be in harmony from the first day."" I don't think this will be a great Dow's, but it is an enjoyable one. If it wakes up, it might be entitled to an uptick. For the moment, between the top blends in the Symington stable, I'd lean to Graham's as the best in this vintage. Thus the Gottardi Estate Winery came into existence in Egna-Mazzon.

But before the Gottardis were able to get the first bottle of their own wine onto the market, a great deal of work was necessary. All of the vineyards were replanted and set up with Guyot trellises. And the winery was also rebuilt. Only in 1995 was it possible to make the first wines, starting out with Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. “But because Pinot Noir enjoys great popularity both nationally and internationally, in 2010 we decided to devote ourselves exclusively to this unique grape variety,” says Alexander Gottardi.

And the conditions for this in Mazzon above Egna are absolutely ideal: sandstone, limestone, and marl soils with long evening sun and cool mountain winds at night prevent the grapes from maturing too quickly. “They also grow rich in finesse and elegance,” Gottardi says with enthusiasm, as he makes his contribution to top-quality Pinot Noirs with a consistent policy of quality. Thus the grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected.

“From the first year, the grape material has been transported into the winery only with gravity, which is very important since Pinot Noir is very sensitive,” the winegrower explains. It’s very true: here, the soil is clay-limestone, there is good exposure for the ripening of the Pinot Noir grapes and the slopes are very steep. The finesse combined with the roundness and vinosity of the wines that are produced here is characteristic of the region. This is in contrast to the Pinot Noirs of the left bank which are more robust, full bodied but also sometimes "heavier," adds Jack Chaput. The wines of the Côte des Bars are indeed increasingly sought after in both France and abroad. There is undoubtedly a micro-climate associated with a micro-terroir. "When I arrived, 60% of our champagnes were sold to mass-market retailers,” continues Jack Chaput.
Today, this market represents only 20%. Our founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed closely in their footsteps.

Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three houses in the Rioja region.

For over a century our emotions have been rooted in our love and passion for this land and its harvest. Yes, it's embryonic, but it's not unapproachable, much like any other high-quality New World Cabernet these days, with the ability to age for two decades or more.

Producer

Penfolds

Country

Australia

Region

South Australia

Varietal

Proprietary Red

Vintage

2016

Sku

13303

Size

750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/13303-penfolds-cabernet-sauvignon-bin-707.gif?v=1789459389
pierre-peters-brut-reserve-nv-750ml
Pierre Peters Brut Reserve 750ML

Producer Description:

These are sleek, racy champagnes, expressing a classic character of Côte des Blancs chardonnay. The name ‘Zona Zepa’ refers to a government-delimited zone in the area where wildlife is protected. Made in miniscule quantities (1,400 bottles), Zona Zepa is a wine made from pre-phylloxera Monastrell vines planted in 1940. Organically grown grapes produce a wine of extreme purity and balance. With incredible precision, the wine expresses the dried wild herb aromas one can smell in this vineyard, along with dried thyme, oregano and licorice. Zona Zepa communicates a very clean, profound expression of Monastrell. The Candela family established the bodega in 1925. Winemaker Augustin Carrion is one of the key figures whose work has shown the potential of the Monastrell grape in Yecla. Monastrell is better known as Mourvèdre in France’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, where the terroir and climate are similar to Yecla; however, the grape is native to Spain. Located in the warmer southeast part of Spain, Yecla is one of the country’s oldest wine regions, with a rich history that dates back to the 6th Century. In recent years, the astounding rediscovery of Yecla by American journalists and consumers has prompted international acclaim for wines based on Monastrell.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/13773-senorio-de-barahonda-zona-zepa_1.jpg?v=1789459396
taittinger-brut-prestige-blanc-de-blancs-750ml
Taittinger Brut Prestige 750ML

This Champagne is a blend of some 30 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards, respectively 40% and 60% of the total, from several harvests of perfectly ripened grapes.

95 Tasting Panel

Bright and lively, this is one of my favorite non vintage Bruts. She employed the skills of highly regarded winemaker Riccardo Cotarella and they have created an outstanding icon wine they decided to name Montevetrano. Montevetrano is a small zone in the hills near the commune of San Cipriano Picentino, not far from Salerno. Mountains surround the property, with the vineyards situated on gentle slopes facing south by southwest. The heart of the estate is a beautiful, ancient villa. In the first years of production the basement of the villa also served as the cellar. Now the wine is made and stored in a new modern cellar, built in 2000. Silvia and her friends use the old cellar for private vintages. Within a very short period of time her work with Cotarella has produced an absolute jewel in this location. Between the end of September and the start of October, Montevetrano first harvests the Merlot grape, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon and finally the Aglianico. Fermentation initially occurs in steel vats for about 15 days, after which the wine is transferred to new barrels for 10-12 months. The process is traditional but also strictly controlled, guaranteeing proper refinement and a balanced maturation. The process also ensures the grapes retain the regional features typical of Montevetrano. The Collas own a massive chunk of the vineyard and they now sell a small quantity of grapes to Dave Fletcher, who is making gentle and very well welcome waves with his traditionally expressive Barbaresco wines. (We import Dave’s wines too; I never thought I’d bring in a Piemontese wine made by an Aussi, but the wines are simply too good to not embrace, and so is the guy.) Also, a portion of the cru now belongs to Vietti (which will surely change its notoriety), but the Collas own the Tenuata Roncaglia estate and vineyards in its entirety. Here you find more than Nebbiolo. There’s also some ancient vine Barbera facing southwest in what others would’ve ripped out and planted to Nebbiolo. Tino’s reasoning is that it’s been here for more than eighty years and he trusts that they knew what they were doing back in the day. “When we replant, it will be Barbera.” This Barbera is “Costa Bruna.”

“Tenuta Roncaglia has always been recognized as one of the most prestigious and important Barbaresco production areas (also mentioned by Lorenzo Fantini in his book ‘Monograph on Viticulture and Oenology in the Province of Cuneo’1880). Alessandro Masnaghetti writes in his “Map of Barbaresco Cru, 1994: “…the position of Roncaglie, together with Roncagliette, is one of the best we can see on the side of the hill that begins at Roccalini and rises towards Treiso…” And Daniel Thomases, in the Wine Spectator of January 1995: “Roncaglie is recognized as one of the best locations in the entire Barbaresco area.”

Roncaglie is a remarkable hill. Steep, amphitheater-esque, geometric, perfectly situated facing south to southwest and on calcareous marl and sand with a rise of about forty meters. The Barbaresco wines it renders have been simply too good to keep my hands off. I can drink them like they’re my house wine—so much red fruit and deliciousness, and packed with seriousness, too. The grapes must reach a maturity of at least 10.5 per cent potential alcohol for village-level red wine, 11.0 per cent for village-level white wine and Premier Cru red wine, and 11.5 per cent for Premier Cru white wine.

The Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy has been named after Nuits-Saint-Georges, which is the subregion's largest town, and which used to play an important role in the trading of these wines.

Producer Description:

The Domaine of Faiveley is situated in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, France. When Denis takes over from him in 1992, the estate is made up of 4.5 hectares in the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot. In 1993, Denis and Laurence, his wife, take over an estate of 4 hectares including plots of First Growth Lavaux Saint-Jacques, Village plots situated En Motrot, Au Vellé and En Champs and also a plot in Marsannay in the place named Les Longeroies. In 1997, they buy a plot situated En Combe du Dessus in Gevrey-Chambertin; in 1999, a plot of Chambertin Great Growth and in 2000. He died at the age of 51 in January 2006. Now, under son Arnaud and the watchful eye of his mother Laurence, the wines are achieving the minerality and elegance (and seemingly without sacrificing weight) that Denis sought.

Containing the largest Grand Cru in all of the Côte d’Or, Vougeot, the village, takes its name from the small stream flowing through it, called Vouge. Over three quarters of the village retains Grand Cru status, and a single vineyard at that: Clos de Vougeot (or simply, Clos Vougeot). Its mass—over 50 ha—retains the single name chiefly for historic reasons.

But today, Clos de Vougeot contains over 80 owners and shows significant soil and slope variations within its boundaries. The top, bordering Musigny and Grands Echezeaux, is calcareous and gravelly on oolitic limestone and exhibits wonderful drainage. The middle sections are limestone, gravel and clay with less of a slope. The lower part has little slant and is mostly made of clay. Historically the diverse parcels were blended but today the abundance of owners means that everyone has his own style. Exploring and understanding them is part of the allure of Clos de Vougeot.

In general a fine Clos de Vougeot when young will be dense and dark but juicy, with a pronounced austerity, and needs a good ten years to bring it to its full potential.

Gevrey-Chambertin wine is produced in the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.
