Originally from Bordeaux, it was in 2009 that he began to make wine under his own name from a scant 3.5 ha in the heart of Anjou and Savennieres. Knowing that the quality of his fruit was of most importance, he committed himself absolutely to the health of his vines, choosing to farm organically and spend the majority of his time in the vineyards. His devotion paid off quickly, for in just a few vintages, his name began to circulate among Loire growers, eventually to top restaurants in Paris, and finally overseas. The speed at which he has garnered so much praise speaks to the remarkable quality of his wines.

It is wines like these that make us remember why we love this business. The Chateau dates to the 16th century, but not much is known until 1813, when a local winemaker moved in and began producing wine on site. In 1997, Yvonne and Jean-François Lamunière decided to recreate the abandoned vineyard with the help of Françoise Foucault. In 2007, Matthieu Vallée took over and decided to keep the name Chateau Yvonne in hommage to the incredible work done by the previous owners. Today the domaine is one of the best producers in Saumur, composed of 3 hectares of Chenin Blanc and 8 hectares of Cabernet Franc, spread out over 28 small plots in three villages. The vineyards have been farmed organically (Ecocert certified) since 1997 and biodynamically since 2012. Yvonne’s production remains extremely low, averaging only 2000 cs annually. All vineyard work here is done manually, and Matthieu makes the wines with as little manipulation as possible: native yeast fermentation, no additions other than SO2, slow malolactic fermentation, minimal racking, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. Overlooking the Dentelles de Montmirail, Santa Duc produces some of the most recognised wines of the Gigondas appellation and the Rhône Valley.

The wine estate name “Santa Duc” comes from the Grand Duke owl that lives in the region. Since 1874, 6 generations have succeeded at Domaine Santa Duc and have succeeded in raising it to the rank of the greatest Santa Duc Gigondas even though it was already known for its red wines since the Gallo-Roman era. In 1985, Yves Gras took over the torch of his father Edmond and made wines known internationally. He also buys plots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to diversify its terroir. Benjamin later took over the direction of Domaine Santa Duc. The work of the Gras family is now recognised worldwide.

The keyword is the RESPECT that guides Yves Gras’s decisions in Santa Duc. He sees the plant as a living being in balance with its environment: Biodiversity, Biological and Biodynamics are required to develop Santa Duc Gigondas. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault grape varieties are grown on two soil types, maintaining biodiversity through organic farming. The intervention is minimal to make Santa Duc wines, bottling is done without filtration, the harvest is whole and fermentation is carried out with native yeasts.

The wines of Santa Duc are renamed, especially those in the Gigondas appellation, such as the Cuvée Tradition, as well as the appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But this Domaine also expresses its know-how through other appellations such as Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône, Rasteau, Vin de Pays du Vaucluse. Domaine Santa Duc produces red wines of character. The Gras family seeks to reveal great wines through their purity, depth and elegance. Just over half of the area is planted to Chenin and the rest to Cabernet Franc. The age of the vines varies from 4 to 80 years, with a high proportion of old vines. It is made from Chenin Blanc, the protagonist grape of the Saumur region in the Loire Valley, France. The must obtained ferments spontaneously with only indigenous yeasts and is aged in French oak barrels for 2-4 years for nine months. The man is intensely driven by passion and it screams from the bottle upon opening. Like myself, the first time you taste one of his Chenin Blanc wines, it will likely send shivers down your spine. Electricity and high-frequency is the game here and you’d better be ready to get your socks blasted off when you pull the cork on one of these puppies. Romain and a group of other producers come from a very special hill named, Brézé. Brézé, an unassuming and quiet hill, is reasserting itself as one of the most relevant terroirs in all the world and the likely reason for this reemergence is because of Guiberteau’s startling (literally) and original wines. A little secret about this estate is that while everyone seems to be talking about his whites, we believe his reds to be some of the crowning jewels of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc. He’s got that variety serious dialed in.

Known for its famous castles, breathtaking skyline and some of the most celebrated wines in France, this picturesque city sits in the center of the Loire Valley. Saumur spans a large distance at just under 4,500 hectares and sits to the east of the Coteaux du Layon, an area that has a harder time producing botrytis compared to neighboring appellations. The climatic nature of Saumur combined with the dense and shallow limestone soils has, throughout time, yielded superb sparkling wine. Though, dry styles of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc can exemplify winemaking at its greatest and are quickly rising in popularity to become a favorite amongst those seeking world-class wine. The electric and compacted wine of Guiberteau have exemplified the energy of Brézé. Over three quarters of the village retains Grand Cru status, and a single vineyard at that: Clos de Vougeot (or simply, Clos Vougeot). Its mass—over 50 ha—retains the single name chiefly for historic reasons.

But today, Clos de Vougeot contains over 80 owners and shows significant soil and slope variations within its boundaries. The top, bordering Musigny and Grands Echezeaux, is calcareous and gravelly on oolitic limestone and exhibits wonderful drainage. The middle sections are limestone, gravel and clay with less of a slope. The lower part has little slant and is mostly made of clay. Historically the diverse parcels were blended but today the abundance of owners means that everyone has his own style. Exploring and understanding them is part of the allure of Clos de Vougeot.

In general a fine Clos de Vougeot when young will be dense and dark but juicy, with a pronounced austerity, and needs a good ten years to bring it to its full potential.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/17332-domaine-de-la-vougeraie-clos-de-vougeot_1.jpg?v=1789157172
dom-vougeraie-charmes-chambertin-mazoyer-2017-750ml
Domaine De La Vougeraie Charmes Chambertin Mazoyeres 750ML 2017

Mazoyères-Chambertin is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. Mazoyères-Chambertin is located within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. It is situated below (to the east of) the Route des Grands Crus. It borders on Latricières-Chambertin and the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru aux Combottes in the west, Charmes-Chambertin in the north, Gevrey-Chambertin village level vineyards in the east, and Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru vineyards in the south. The AOC was created in 1937.

A peculiarity of Mazoyères-Chambertin is that the appellations Charmes-Chambertin (of the neighbouring Grand Cru vineyard) may be used interchangeably with that of Mazoyères-Chambertin. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Chambolle-Musigny may only be used for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape. There are 25 Premier Cru vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny, and two Grand Cru vineyards: Musigny and Bonnes Mares. The AOC was created in 1936.

In 2008, 152.23 hectares (376.2 acres) of vineyard surface was in production for Chambolle-Musigny at village and Premier Cru level, and 6,044 hectoliter of wine was produced, corresponding to slightly over 800,000 bottles. Within the commune, there are also vineyards (on the flatter land to the east of the N74 road) which are only entitled to the regional Bourgogne appellation.

The main grape variety is Pinot noir for red Musigny, and Chardonnay for white Musigny. The AOC regulations also allow up to 15 per cent total of Chardonnay, Pinot blanc and Pinot gris as accessory grapes in the red wine, but this not very often practiced. The dominant soils here are limestone and tuffeau stone but outcroppings of gravel and sandy clay give completely different expressions of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc.

Certified biodynamic. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc. After finishing wine school in Angers, she befriended the Rochais family on the Chaume hill, who owned Chateau de Plaisance (more a farmhouse than Chateau) and its 25 ha of vines growing on the schist bedrock of the appellation. With plans to sell the historic estate to the local cooperative, Vanessa convinced the family to sell to her instead, allowing her to continue the fine legacy they left, while forging a new path for Loire greatness. Luckily for Vanessa, she inherited some of the most well-cared for vines on the hill, as Plaisance has been certified organic since 1998 and certified biodynamic since 2004. She of course has continued the biodynamic viticulture started by her predecessors, knowing that taking care of the natural environment of the vines is of utmost importance. Since her first vintage in 2019, she has helped raise the image of dry Chenin made on the Chaume hill to where it is now one of the most interesting terroirs in the Loire.

Only 10km south of Savennieres, Chaume is a sweet-wine only appellation (Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru and Coteaux de Layon 1er Cru Chaume), and so Vanessa and the other producers of dry Chenin on the hill, cannot legally put Chaume on their labels. This hasn’t deterred Vanessa from continuing to make world-class dry wines, joining other growers on the hill to create their own name for dry Chenin made from vines on the Chaume hill – Ronceray. This name has been adopted by growers to help promote the dry wines of Chaume, with its origin coming from the name of a 17th century monastery that made dry wines on the Chaume hill. Vanessa is unquestionably of the leaders of this qualitative surge in the area, with whites and reds of gorgeous purity and soaring minerality.

Farming Practice:
Certified Biodynamic

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/23844-michel-lafarge-beaune-clos-aigrots_1.jpg?v=1789157479
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/23928-day-pinot-noir-johan-vineyard_1.jpg?v=1789157420
camille-melinand-fleurie-2022-750ml
Camille Melinand Fleurie 2022 750ML

Camille Mélinand is doing seriously impressive things in Fleurie, and this bottle proves it. His 60-year-old gamay vines sit in pink granite soils, and he keeps it real with a hands-off, nothing-added approach that lets the fruit shine. You're getting fresh strawberries, wildflowers, fennel, and herbs on the nose, then a palate that's all silky tannins, floral notes, and that mineral edge that makes you pay attention. The finish has this subtle iron thing going on that's totally moreish.
