Unsurprisingly, no price is paid in terms of levity ? a Riesling of 10% alcohol is still eminently buoyant ? so what?s the downside? And why don?t more vintners follow Mertes? lead ? in general, and not just in low-acid vintages? The bouquet is precise and very refined, jumping from the glass in a mix of fresh lime, pear, salty, slate minerality, orange peel, a touch of wild yeasts and a lovely combination of violets and lavender in its floral topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and still quite primary in profile, with a lovely core of fruit, superb minerality, impeccable focus and balance and a long, complex and zesty finish. The tell-tale red stone savoriness segues seamlessly into bright lemon. The palate is rounded, juicy and full-fruited, channeling yellow apple and ripest lemon. This is joyful and vivid.
