Thus the Gottardi Estate Winery came into existence in Egna-Mazzon.

But before the Gottardis were able to get the first bottle of their own wine onto the market, a great deal of work was necessary. All of the vineyards were replanted and set up with Guyot trellises. And the winery was also rebuilt. Only in 1995 was it possible to make the first wines, starting out with Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. “But because Pinot Noir enjoys great popularity both nationally and internationally, in 2010 we decided to devote ourselves exclusively to this unique grape variety,” says Alexander Gottardi.

And the conditions for this in Mazzon above Egna are absolutely ideal: sandstone, limestone, and marl soils with long evening sun and cool mountain winds at night prevent the grapes from maturing too quickly. “They also grow rich in finesse and elegance,” Gottardi says with enthusiasm, as he makes his contribution to top-quality Pinot Noirs with a consistent policy of quality. Thus the grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected.

“From the first year, the grape material has been transported into the winery only with gravity, which is very important since Pinot Noir is very sensitive,” the winegrower explains. His Pinot Noir is first matured in stainless steel tanks and then in small French barrique barrels, and finally allowed to age in the bottle. She employed the skills of highly regarded winemaker Riccardo Cotarella and they have created an outstanding icon wine they decided to name Montevetrano. Montevetrano is a small zone in the hills near the commune of San Cipriano Picentino, not far from Salerno. Mountains surround the property, with the vineyards situated on gentle slopes facing south by southwest. The heart of the estate is a beautiful, ancient villa. In the first years of production the basement of the villa also served as the cellar. Now the wine is made and stored in a new modern cellar, built in 2000. Silvia and her friends use the old cellar for private vintages. Within a very short period of time her work with Cotarella has produced an absolute jewel in this location. Between the end of September and the start of October, Montevetrano first harvests the Merlot grape, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon and finally the Aglianico. Fermentation initially occurs in steel vats for about 15 days, after which the wine is transferred to new barrels for 10-12 months. The process is traditional but also strictly controlled, guaranteeing proper refinement and a balanced maturation. The process also ensures the grapes retain the regional features typical of Montevetrano. Cotarella is particularly proud of this wine, being the very first icon wine he has made; he considers it the father of his reds.

Producer Description:

It is only a matter of time before the world comes to fully embrace the magnitude and relevance of the Colla family in the cultural and historical fabric of the Langhe, as they’ve truly helped set the stage for today’s more lifted and elegant expression of Barolo and Barbaresco.

Roncaglie is a colossal Barbaresco vineyard that hasn’t been widely acknowledged of late—but that’s about to change. The Collas own a massive chunk of the vineyard and they now sell a small quantity of grapes to Dave Fletcher, who is making gentle and very well welcome waves with his traditionally expressive Barbaresco wines. (We import Dave’s wines too; I never thought I’d bring in a Piemontese wine made by an Aussi, but the wines are simply too good to not embrace, and so is the guy.) Also, a portion of the cru now belongs to Vietti (which will surely change its notoriety), but the Collas own the Tenuata Roncaglia estate and vineyards in its entirety. Here you find more than Nebbiolo. There’s also some ancient vine Barbera facing southwest in what others would’ve ripped out and planted to Nebbiolo. Tino’s reasoning is that it’s been here for more than eighty years and he trusts that they knew what they were doing back in the day. “When we replant, it will be Barbera.” This Barbera is “Costa Bruna.”

“Tenuta Roncaglia has always been recognized as one of the most prestigious and important Barbaresco production areas (also mentioned by Lorenzo Fantini in his book ‘Monograph on Viticulture and Oenology in the Province of Cuneo’1880). Alessandro Masnaghetti writes in his “Map of Barbaresco Cru, 1994: “…the position of Roncaglie, together with Roncagliette, is one of the best we can see on the side of the hill that begins at Roccalini and rises towards Treiso…” And Daniel Thomases, in the Wine Spectator of January 1995: “Roncaglie is recognized as one of the best locations in the entire Barbaresco area.”

Roncaglie is a remarkable hill. Steep, amphitheater-esque, geometric, perfectly situated facing south to southwest and on calcareous marl and sand with a rise of about forty meters. The Barbaresco wines it renders have been simply too good to keep my hands off. I can drink them like they’re my house wine—so much red fruit and deliciousness, and packed with seriousness, too. Pietro Colla, Tino’s son and the family’s winemaker since 2006 (which marked a notable level of precision in the wines from every year thereafter), continues to outdo himself.

Producer Description:

70% Frappato/30% Nero d'Avola. After a period of growing and selling grapes, Giovanni’s son, Luigi, made the bold decision to vinify his own fruit, bottling the first wine under his own label in 1958. For an independent grower like Luigi to bottle his own wine at a time when plans to establish an official appellation in Barbaresco were only in their infancy was nearly unthinkable. The Rosso is considered to be one of the very best, with the fruit?s inherent structure delicately enhanced by a brief passage in barriques. The Vecchie Vigne shows lots of depth and textural weaving with dark berries and oak spice. In fact, the oak (and that big 15% alcohol) is more prominent in this 18,000-bottle release. It offers long-lasting notes of smoke, sweet cedar and woodshop.

Vinous: 92 Points

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne presents an intense bouquet of crushed raspberries and cloves giving way to dusty florals and hints of incense. The textures are wonderfully silky and refined, ushering in a rush of mineral-tinged primary fruits that are brighter and more red-toned in this vintage than usual, as well as incredibly concentrated. The tannins come forward through the close, grippy and youthfully dry, along with a salty flourish, while leaving hints of licorice to slowly taper off. Siro Pacenti cut their production down by 50% to create this successful expression of the 2017 vintage.

Producer

Siro Pacenti

Country

Italy

Region

Tuscany

Subregion

Montalcino

Varietal

Sangiovese

Vintage

2017

Sku

15163

Size

750ml

Cerbaiona Description

Over the decades, Cerbaiona has become a cult Brunello, immediately identifiable with the land that produces it. This vintage is a precise reflection of Coastal Tuscany, as opposed to a more generic "Tuscan" wine from elsewhere in this large central Italian region. You taste the ripeness and soft fruit weight that comes from a coastal appellation with especially bright luminosity and warm Mediterranean offshore breezes. Sassicaia from the cool vintages is a famously reticent or withholding wine in its earliest years, requiring a long lead time before it eases into an ideal drinking window. That's definitely not the case here. This wine is beautiful and compelling straight out of the gate, showing a lovely mix of dark fruit, oak spice, balanced freshness, textural richness, soft tannins and an expertly contained 14% alcohol content. The wine's immediate character is what distinguishes this vintage, and I wouldn't get too fussed by exaggerated cellar-aging ambitions. The wine awards sheer pleasure in its current form, with dazzling primary fruit and soaring intensity over the near and medium term.

Producer

Tenuta San Guido

Country

Italy

Region

Tuscany

Subregion

Bolgheri

Varietal

Proprietary Red

Vintage

2020

Sku

15851

Size

750ml

Kerin O'Keefe: 97 Points

Spicy aromas reveal pipe tobacco, underbrush, new leather and ripe berry alongside whiffs of fragrant purple flower. It is made with fruit from vines planted in 1968 in ancient soils rich in quartz at a very high 600 meters in elevation. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. (the initials stand for ?vecchie vigne,? or "old vines") reveals a soulful personality with a very elegant set of aromas and compelling complexity. There is heritage rose, lilac and something earthy like tarragon or marjoram. Underripe cherry and redcurrant are found at the core; however, that ethereal herbal note continues to the palate where it meets a chalky mineral tone. Powdery tannins stick to the side of your mouth for a very long time. - Monica Larner

Jeb Dunnuck: 98 Points

"A similar medium red color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. is another showstopper, with stunning floral and layered aromas of licorice, ripe red cherries, blood orange, and clove. Mouthwatering and structured, this is a noble wine, and while it?s medium-bodied. It?s not for the faint of heart. With ripe, angular tannins that frame this wine, it propels through the palate with notes of saline and vibrant acidity. Long and tension-packed, it demands several years of proper cellaring and feels as though it will improve over the coming two decades at a glacial pace."-Audrey Frick

Vinous: 95 Points

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino VV is youthfully coy in the glass, lifting up with a nuanced blend of dried roses, licorice and clove, excited by hints of spiced oranges. This is cool-toned and saline in character, with silken textures contrasted by crisp red fruits and salty mineral tones that saturate the senses. The 2019 finishes long, primary and with crunchy tannins, yet there are depths of complexity here just waiting to unfold.
