It's brought up exactly like the Coteau de Vernon, so the difference (and there are always differences between the two wines) are all due to terroir. Stunning notes of ripe citrus, orange pith, spice, and floral notes all emerge from the glass, and this medium to full-bodied Condrieu has good acidity, a vibrant, elegant texture, and a great finish. It's not a blockbuster, but this estate made sure to hold onto a sense of freshness and purity in both their 2017s and 2018s. Yields are kept very low (between 25 and 30 hectoliters per hectare for Cairanne and Gigondas) by close pruning and a vendange verte in abundant vintages. The grapes are all hand-picked, completely destemmed, and vinified parcel by parcel, varietals separated. During harvest Laurent may have almost 100 different microvinifications in the cellar, representing different grape varietals of some 60 distinct parcels. All are fermented in enameled steel vats with temperatures controlled at 28C with a day or two at 34C for maximum extraction. Overlooking the Dentelles de Montmirail, Santa Duc produces some of the most recognised wines of the Gigondas appellation and the Rhône Valley.

The wine estate name “Santa Duc” comes from the Grand Duke owl that lives in the region. Since 1874, 6 generations have succeeded at Domaine Santa Duc and have succeeded in raising it to the rank of the greatest Santa Duc Gigondas even though it was already known for its red wines since the Gallo-Roman era. In 1985, Yves Gras took over the torch of his father Edmond and made wines known internationally. He also buys plots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to diversify its terroir. Benjamin later took over the direction of Domaine Santa Duc. The work of the Gras family is now recognised worldwide.

The keyword is the RESPECT that guides Yves Gras’s decisions in Santa Duc. He sees the plant as a living being in balance with its environment: Biodiversity, Biological and Biodynamics are required to develop Santa Duc Gigondas. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault grape varieties are grown on two soil types, maintaining biodiversity through organic farming. The intervention is minimal to make Santa Duc wines, bottling is done without filtration, the harvest is whole and fermentation is carried out with native yeasts.

The wines of Santa Duc are renamed, especially those in the Gigondas appellation, such as the Cuvée Tradition, as well as the appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But this Domaine also expresses its know-how through other appellations such as Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône, Rasteau, Vin de Pays du Vaucluse. Domaine Santa Duc produces red wines of character. What is extraordinary is that he built his reputation and fame in just 15 short years, and in an appellation that was until recently seriously despised by the cognoscenti. He proved that even (or should we say particularly) from the flat land near the Isère river confluence, it is possible to make rich, concentrated reds that demonstrate everything that is exciting about the Syrah grape - the explosive black fruit, the aromatic intensity, the pepper and spice complexity, all supported by crisp acidity and good tannins. They are difficult to resist young, but patient cellaring is well-rewarded.

Graillot began making wine in 1985, having tired of life as Marketing Manager for a large French agricultural equipment company. He was lucky to benefit from the advice of friends such as Paul Jaboulet, Jean-Louis Grippat, and Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac in Burgundy, and immediately struck vinous gold. This led him, in 1988, to buy the vineyards he had previously rented, to which he later added land in Saint-Joseph and even a few vines on the Hermitage hill - just enough to make 2 barrels a year!

The quality of Graillot wines has become legendary, and he became the father-figure to a whole new generation of young Rhône producers. Medium-bodied, it has beautiful tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. It's one of the rare 2021s that really needs a few years of bottle age. The wine was completely destemmed and brought up all in concrete tanks. This rocking effort is still a baby in terms of evolution but still gives up a huge bouquet of kirsch, strawberries Asian spices, candle wax, white flowers, and graphite. Deep, rich, and powerful, yet with the hallmark elegance of the estate, it has fine tannin, an awesome mid-palate, incredible purity and a huge finish. It's another great, great vintage for this cuv?e that readers shouldn't miss. Brilliant wines emerge from this estate located in the northern part of Ch?teauneuf-du-Pape which is run with incredible talent and passion by Sophie Armenier. They produce a terrific C?tes du Rh?ne and Lirac as well as the top Ch?teauneuf-du-Papes, and their white is increasingly up with the cr?me de la cr?me of the vintage.

Vinous: 98 Points

Powerful raspberry liqueur, cherry pie, incense, potpourri and spicecake aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up a vibrant mineral nuance with aeration. Sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated but shockingly lithe raspberry, cherry liqueur, five-spice powder and lavender pastille flavors given lift and spine by a jolt of juicy acidity. Blends richness and delicacy with a deft hand and finishes wonderfully long and precise, with pliant tannins adding shape and gentle grip. Is this the wine of the vintage? Her first vintage in Châteauneuf du Pape was in 2003, and she produced a bevy of truly brilliant wines from 2003 to 2019 under her Domaine de Saint Préfert label. In 2020, the estate was renamed to Famille Isable Ferrando, and while she produced as many as five cuvées in the past, today the model has moved away from special cuvées, with the focus on a single, classic Châteauneuf du Pape, although she does continue to release a Colombis, F601, and Cuvée Special Vielles Clairettes. Having tasted with Ferrando since early in the 2000s, it has been interesting to see the gradual changes in style at the estate, with the early wines being exuberant and powerful, yet always balanced and elegant. Starting in 2009, you can see a gradual shift in the style of the wines, with Ferrando opting to keep some stems in the fermentations, as well as a subtle shift in the élevage of the wines. I suspect there were subtle changes in harvest dates as well, but her wines have always been true to the region and have utterly classic profiles. The most dramatic change was moving away from the special cuvée model in 2020 with the first release of the Famille Isabel Ferrando Châteauneuf du Pape, which includes grapes from the prior classic cuvée, Reserve Auguste Favier, and Collection Charles Giraud. The quality speaks for itself, and this estate has always gone from strength to strength, which I expect to continue."-Jeb Dunnuck

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0924/4947/2879/files/23695-isabel-ferrando-chateauneuf-du-pape_1.jpg?v=1789071063
domaine-trapadis-cairanne-les-garrigue-2023-750ml
Domaine Du Trapadis Cairanne Les Garrigue Cotes Du Rhone Villages 750ML 2023

Domaine de Trapadis is certified organic and biodynamic, cultivating a 35-hectare parcel in and around Rasteau; founded in 1850, it is now in the capable hands of Helen Durand.
