(made from very old vines on a steep slope that was not touched by the frost): Good dark red; not the most saturated of these '16s. A touch of musky reduction to the aromas of black raspberry, mocha and game, with rose petal and peony notes providing lift. Wonderfully silky and sweet; faintly gamey but still racy and delicate. Not an obviously structured wine but boasts subtle sweetness and finishes with sneaky, slowly mounting length.
Here the nose is earthier and not as elegant with a somber if complex array of overtly floral and dark berry liqueur-like aromas. There is excellent richness to the sleekly muscular and powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate thanks to the abundant dry extract that imparts a velvety texture to the driving and long if slightly warm finish. This is really quite good but it can't match the brilliance of the Les Cailles. (Drink starting 2028)
