Carlisle - Syrah Radiant Ridge Bennett Valley 2019

100% Syrah / pH: 3.69 / T.A.: 5.1 g/L / Alcohol: 14.9% / Cases Produced: 321

Picked nine days before the Mourvèdre, 20% of the fruit was not destemmed to add a bit of extra spice to the aromas.  After five days of cold soaking in tank, fermentation began on its own.  Hence, there was no need to inoculate.  After a long, slow fermentation (24 days!), the wine was pressed to all French oak, 21% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Carlisle Description

Carlisle is a small, family-owned Sonoma County winery specializing in the production of old-vine, vineyard designated Zinfandels and red Rhône/Spanish varieties (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Petite Sirah). While they like their wines to be bold and intensely flavored, each reflecting its vintage and vineyard, they also strive to create wines of balance, complexity, and nuance.

The goal is always the same - grow and source the finest fruit, do as little as possible to it, and bottle outstanding, pleasurable wine at the fairest price possible. Mike Carlisle and Jay Maddox and the team at Carlisle Winery have been able to grow to nearly 10,000 cases, garnering high praise from wine critics and consumers alike.

Vinous: 93 Points

The 2019 Syrah Radiant Ridge Vineyard offers up a beguiling mix of wild cherry, tobacco, licorice, spice, tobacco and earthiness. I would give the tannins a bit of time in bottle to settle down. This wild, virile Syrah sure has a lot to offer. This is an especially earthy, savory style, with the fruit pushed into the background. This needs quite a bit of air, but there is a lot of wine there!
