Do Ferreiro is a small family winery in the historic heart of Spain’s coastal Rías Baixas region. Highly regarded for crafting Albariño, the winery has become a reference point for the grape. Do Ferreiro was founded in 1973 by Gerardo Mendez, though he never labelled a wine Do Ferreiro until the 1986 vintage. Gerardo and his son, Manuel, and daughter, Encarna, farm over 175 tiny plots of Albariño by hand in the Salnès subzone of Rías Baixas. The family owns 10 hectares of organically grown vines, three of which are over 50 years old, and one of which is over 200 years old! The valley’s proximity to the ocean, ideal climate due to the natural protection by mountain ranges, and decomposed granitic soil have gained the reputation for being the ideal zone in Rías Baixas for growing profound Albariño.
Do Ferreiro Albariño is from vines that are 15-50 years old from various plots in Salnés grown on soils of granite and sand. All grapes were destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. In the glass the wine displays a brilliant light lemon color with a translucent green rim. The nose is enchanting with aromas of sea-spray, Ruby Red grapefruit, peaches and fresh herbs. The palate delivers unbelievable concentration, depth and length as all the complex mineral, fruit and herbal flavors grow build to a crescendo and monumental finish. After one sip, you'll understand why it is a reference for the varietal and the region. Enjoy with seafood: mussels, oysters, prawns, lobster and, of course, octopus. De Maison
The Mendéz family's textbook Albariño uses grapes from a mind-boggling 164 small parcels in the Val do Salnés villages of Cambados, Castrelo, Meaño, Ribadumia and Sanxenxo. The kind of wine that makes you long for a plate of fresh seafood, it's racy, pure and superbly balanced, all citrus, lime and wet stones and impressive palate length.
When I tasted this wine in mid-June, the nose of the 2024 Albariño was still too closed and a little reductive to show its true colors, but it was in the palate where I could see the harmony and balance of the year, a year with purity and elegance, with a perfect balance between alcohol and ripeness and freshness and acidity, with textbook parameters for good development of aromatics and flavors while keeping the spark from the granite soils. It's very Salnés. Some 90,000 bottles will be produced, but some wine is still to be bottled and kept with the fine lees in stainless steel. - Luis Gutierrez
