Domaine Faiveley - Charmes Chambertin 2015

Domaine Faiveley Description

The Domaine of Faiveley is situated in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, France. Wine runs deep in the Faiveley family’s blood. Seven generations and one of the largest owners in Burgundy, with holdings spreading from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte Chalonnaise, featuring polished, collectible reds and whites with exceptionally high ratings. Today it is managed by Erwan Faiveley and his sister Eve Faiveley.

"Faiveley’s wines are... supremely clean and elegant: definitive examples of Pinot Noir... above all they have richness and breed, the thumbprint of a master winemaker." -Clive Coates M.W. Côte d’Or, A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy.

James Suckling: 94 Points

(Joseph Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Red, France) Ripe, earthy and herbal, this is a really complex wine with a great combination of richness and tannic power. The silky finish really lifts off. Drink or hold.

Vinous: 91 Points

Moderately saturated medium red. Wild aromas of briary raspberry, rose petal and spices complicated by hints of leather and underbrush. Fine-grained on entry, then a bit youthfully aggressive in the middle palate, with its flavors of raspberry, redcurrant and brown spices showing moderate depth and sweetness for grand cru. Notes of tobacco and dried flowers add complexity. Tannins are dusty and strong but just barely avoid dryness. This needs time, but does it have the inherent sweetness and silkiness to improve? My sample softened nicely with 24 hours in the recorked bottle.

Burghound: 91-94 Points

Reduction presently flattens the underlying fruit. Otherwise there is a really lovely texture to the medium weight plus flavors thanks to the abundance of mid-palate sap that coats the mouth and buffers the moderately firm, complex and lingering finish where a touch of wood emerges. This is very Charmes in style and like the Echézeaux, it should be approachable after 6 to 8 years if desired. (Drink starting 2027)
