Guigal - Cote Rotie La Landonne 2013

Guigal Description

One of three single-vineyard Cru Côte Rôtie in the Guigal estate, La Landonne is a remarkable expression of terroir and one of the world’s most coveted wines.

La Landonne is situated on one of the steepest vineyards of the Côte Brune, a 45 degree slope that remarkably requires harvesters to start picking from the bottom of the vineyard and work their way up, placing grape bunches in bins that are set on sleds and dragged up the hill.

Along with its position at the northern end of the Côte Brune and the fact it is the last vineyard to ripen, La Landonne is a wine of driving power, defined by its dark fruit and structure.

Jeb Dunnuck: 98 Points

The gem of the lineup (and my money is on the wine of the vintage), the 2013 Côte Rôtie La Landonne sports a deep purple color and killer notes of blackcurrants, black olives, game, and spice. It picks up more minerality with time in the glass and offers a full-bodied, powerful, concentrated style on the palate. With awesome tannin quality (but lots of them) and integrated, yet high acidity, forget bottles for 7-8 years. It should keep for 2-3 decades.

Decanter: 96 Points

From a granite vineyard, with some limestone, clay and iron-oxide supporting 35 year old vines. As with the other 'Las', this has spent 42 months in new oak barrels. Lifted but deep cedar and incense aromas are joined by pure, fresh, dark fruits. It's very full-bodied and quite extracted in style - tannic and muscular with grippy, dry tannins. There are some saline, mineral notes too. It's still far too young to drink, but will be very good in time. (Drink between 2021-2040)

Vinous: 96 Points

Bright purple. Explosive aromas of ripe dark berries, licorice, incense, vanilla and Indian spices, joined by a smoky nuance as the wine opens up. Deeply concentrated yet impressively lively and precise on the palate, offering intense, finely etched black and blue fruit, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors complemented by hints of olive paste and star anise. Smoothly blends richness and finesse, offering wonderful clarity and no rough edges. Shows superb energy and thrust on the dark-fruit-dominated finish, which features building tannins that add shape and closing grip. (Drink between 2023-2035)
