Description

One of Burgundy's 33 Grand Crus, the "Bonnes-Mares" climat is divided between the communes of Morey-Saint-Denis and particularly Chambolle-Musigny. This flagship wine of the C?te de Nuits, where the siliceous clay soil and limestone slabs overlying white marls lend the Pinot Noir grapes that grow on this exceptional terroir their unique characteristics: power and body without sacrificing finesse and elegance, as well as exceptional cellaring potential.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Description

Here, Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny demonstrate the ability of the C?te de Nuits to blend two distinct temperaments into a single personality.
The Bonnes-Mares vineyard have been known by this name since the late Middle-Ages although the etymology still remains uncertain. The origin might be the verb marer meaning ?to cultivate carefully?, although many like to think the name alludes to ancient mother-goddesses. This explanation, however, is certainly less probable. Its appellation Grand Cru status was recognised on 8th December, 1936.
The appellation Bonnes-Mares lies just south of the Clos de Tart, the neighbouring Grand Cru, forming a rectangle between the hollowed hillsides of Morey and Chambolle. More of it lies in the territory of Chambolle-Musigny than that of Morey-Saint-Denis. Its exposition is easterly and its altitude averages between 250 and 280 metres.

Vinous: 91-93 Points

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from a 0.23-hectare parcel close to the Morey commune. This has a superior bouquet to the Ech?zeaux, more controlled and detailed, offering lovely floral, violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, and fleshy and generous toward the finish. Good potential here. (Drink between 2022-2040)

Burghound: 92-94 Points

A generous application of wood and menthol can be found on the dark pinot fruit, spice, floral and newly turned earth aromas. The rich and muscular if rather supple big-bodied flavors possess a caressing mouth feel, indeed even velvety, before culminating in an impressively persistent finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. (Drink starting 2032)
