Since the first vintage of this wine that I tasted, which hailed from the 1990 vintage, the Mes Favorites bottling has always been a Gevrey-Chambertin that displays broad shoulders and plenty of muscle. In some recent “solar” vintages, the wine can get a bit too powerful for my old school palate, but the 2023 is right in its sweet spot and a ringing success this year. The wine’s aromatic constellation is deep, black fruity and classy, offering up scents of cassis, black cherries, espresso, grilled meats, a fine base of dark soil, cedary oak and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, tangy and complex, with a beautiful sappy core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins, excellent focus and grip and a long, poised and impeccably balanced finish. Impressive juice!
