The 2022 Bierzo “Selección de Parcelas” from Dominio de Anza is an outstanding young
wine. Diego Magaña crafts this wine from a classic, Mencía-based field blend that also includes
Bastardo and Garnacha Tintorera in small percentages, with the vines eighty-five to more than one
hundred years of age. The wine is raised in used Burgundy casks and demi-muids for twelve
months prior to bottling. The bouquet is deep, complex and precise, wafting from the glass in a
blend of sweet dark berries, coffee bean, a touch of tree bark, dark soil tones, sweet stem tones,
woodsmoke and a very discreet framing of oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, deep
and structured, with a fine core of fruit, an excellent foundation of soil, firm, chewy tannins and
lovely balance on the long, youthfully complex and promising finish. All this fine bottle needs is
sufficient hibernation time in the cellar to blossom.
