Chateau Canon-La Gaffelière - St.-Emilion 2010

96 Points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate "This wine shows wonderfully exotic tapenade, licorice, Christmas fruitcake, cedar wood, blackberry and sweet cherry notes in its strikingly provocative aromatics. On the palate, the wine is dense and full-bodied, with stunning concentration, purity, texture and length. An absolutely spectacular success once again from proprietor Stephan von Niepperg."

Chateau Canon-La Gaffelière Description

Château Canon-La-Gaffelière / SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU / PREMIER GRAND CRU CLASSÉ

Located on the slope and the foot of the slope south of the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, Château Canon-La-Gaffelière has belonged to the Counts von Neipperg since 1971. The terroir consists of clay-limestone and clay-sand soil that is particularly efficient at capturing and retaining heat. The choice of grape varieties is rather atypical for the appellation in light of the soil: almost a perfect 50/50 divide between Merlot and Cabernet.

Certified for organic viticulture since the 2014 vintage, the estate produces elegant wines year in and year out. Remarkably well-structured and complex, Canon-La-Gaffelière is pure and unfailingly elegant, reflecting the uncompromising way in which it is made.

Wine Spectator: 96 Points

This takes the power of the vintage and puts it in its pocket for later, preferring instead to let mouthwatering briar, loganberry, mulberry and blackberry fruit strut its way forward, enlivened with roasted wood spice and supported by suavely but thoroughly embedded iron-tinged structure. Should cruise for two decades. Best from 2016 through 2035. 4,500 cases made.

Wine Advocate: 96 Points

This wine shows wonderfully exotic tapenade, licorice, Christmas fruitcake, cedar wood, blackberry and sweet cherry notes in its strikingly provocative aromatics. On the palate, the wine is dense and full-bodied, with stunning concentration, purity, texture and length. It is full-bodied, silky smooth and seems to have more in common with the 2009 than one might expect, although the freshness and tannin levels are slightly more elevated. Drink it over the next 20+ years.

An absolutely spectacular success once again from proprietor Stephan von Niepperg. Gilles Pauquet is the consultant and has done an exemplary job with this particular estate.

James Suckling: 94-95 Points

This is tight and powerful. Solid frame of fruit and tannins. Curious about this. Like the 2009. This is 40% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot.

Wine Enthusiast

A big, bold, ripe wine with firm tannins and dark, solid fruits. The wine has acidity coming from the black currant flavors. Continuing the impressive quality of wines from La Gaffelière, it has weight and a rich feel to it, along with a tight, mineral final texture. This is a wine that is elegant as well as powerful.
