The origins of Château Lafon-Rochet date back to the 17th century. Located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Lafon-Rochet made its mark in 1855 when it was awarded the title of Grand Cru Classé. In 1960, Guy Tesseron acquired the property, and thanks to his hard work and passion, gradually raised Château Lafon-Rochet to the top of its appellation. Basile Tesseron, Michel Tesseron's son, took over the reins of the family estate from 2007 until September 2021, when businessman and founder of the Foncia Group, Jacky Lorenzetti, acquired the estate. Jacky Lorenzetti owns several estates on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, including Château Lilian-Ladouys (Saint-Estèphe) and Château Pédesclaux (Pauillac), and is also co-owner of Château d'Issan (Margaux).
Château Lafon-Rochet, with its golden-yellow charter house, is now a veritable standard-bearer among the great wines of Saint-Estèphe. The vineyard stretches across 40 hectares, superbly situated in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The vines are an average of 38 years old and are planted on two hilltops with different terroirs. The gravelly soils provide excellent drainage, while the clay helps to regulate water stress.
The 2022 Lafon-Rochet is pure class. Silky, aromatic and gracious, Lafon-Rochet is quite possibly the most under-the-radar Saint-Estèphe. Bright blue/purplish fruit, lavender, sage, mint and spice are all beautifully delineated. A wine of sublime elegance and class, LafonRochet is exquisite in 2022. - Antonio Galloni
Rocking notes of currants, leafy tobacco, cassis, graphite, and crushed stone nuances all emerge from the 2022 Château Lafon-Rochet, a seriously good, concentrated, powerful expression from this château that has beautiful purity, ripe, building, yet substantial tannins, and a great finish. It's going to need some time, but this is brilliant.
This shows a terrific tannin backbone with blackcurrants and berries. Medium body. Solid fruit. Vivid. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot and 4% cabernet franc.
94 Points- Jane Anson: Baked plum, damson, black pepper, edges of cut herbs and dried rose petals, campfire smoke and soot. This is intense but has an aromatic quality that hugs through the palate, and the tannins are plentiful but well controlled. 50% new oak plus some large oak casks, and 400l barrels; almost 60% 1st wine, down from 70% last year (in a better vintage this year, really an indication of the focus on quality under the new team). Harvest September 12 to 27. Eric Boissenot consultant together wtih director Christophe Congé, ex Lafite, in his first full vintage. As of 2024 this will be the first Cru Classé in St Estèphe to be certified organic. [Inner quote mark] (4/2023)
