Chateau Pape Clement Description

Located at the gates of Bordeaux,  Château Pape Clément  is one of the oldest wine estates in the region since the first harvests took place in 1252. Château Pape Clément owes its name to Pope Clement V who passionately managed his vineyard before donating it to the Archbishop of Bordeaux. At the time, it was called the "Vignes du Pape Clément". In 1983, Bernard Magrez, the tireless builder and composer of rare wines, bought the property. Bernard Magrez, who now owns 4 Grands Crus Classés in Bordeaux, uses all his energy and determination to raise Château Pape Clément to the rank of the elite of Bordeaux Grands Crus. In 2009, Château Pape Clément was notably rewarded by obtaining a score of 100/100 from the American critic Robert Parker.

Château Pape Clément 2022 is a  Pessac-Léognan wine  from a 73-hectare vineyard. The vines, aged 28 years on average, are planted on Pyrenean clayey gravel soils. The vineyard is managed on a micro-plot basis. Château Pape Clément is certified High Environmental Value 3, SME and Bee-Friendly certification.

The 2022 Château Pape Clément red is made from a blend of  Merlot  (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%).

Jeb Dunnuck: 98 Points

Black raspberries, cassis, graphite, scorched earth, and violet notes are just some of the nuances in the 2022 Château Pape Clément, a gorgeously textured, layered, seamless 2022. It's flawlessly balanced, has a class of tannins that's second to none, is full-bodied, has terrific concentration, and has a gorgeous finish. This classic, seamless, elegant, sensational layered, multi-dimensional Pessac will have 40 years of prime drinking.

James Suckling: 97 Points

A very well-balanced Pape Clement showing a solid structure, concentration and length. Fresh and complex, with a fine streak of minerals and aromas of cassis, berries, white pepper and tapenade. Some wood spices, but they’re quite restrained. Full-bodied, tight and long. A transparent and complete wine for the cellar.

Vinous: 97 Points

The 2022 Pape Clément is a classy, elegant wine. Soaring aromatics open first. On the palate, the 2022 is vibrant and explosive, with terrific depth and exceptional balance. Today's wines here are simply striking because of their energy and verve. Those qualities help make Pape Clément one of the most changed wines in Bordeaux over the last decade or so. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, new leather and sage are some of the many notes that linger on the sustained finish. The 2022 is a superb Pape Clément. Tasted three times.

The Wine Independent: 95-97 Points

95-97 Points, Lisa Perroti-Brown, TheWineIndependent.com: “The 2022 Pape Clement is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon with a yield of 35 hl/ha. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little subdued to begin, soon unfurling to offer evocative notes of baked blackberries, boysenberry preserves, and plum pudding, followed by wafts of cassis, violets, cedar chest, and cumin seed. The full-bodied palate is rich and impactful, delivering layers of bright black cherries and baking spices with a lively backbone and fine-grained tannins, finishing long and energetic.” 05/23

Jane Anson: 95 Points

95 Points, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux: “Deep and intense, but not the full on ink colour that I might have expected. Cocoa bean, fig, rosemary, kirsch, cigar box, black pepper, mint leaf, this ripples with the exuberance of the vintage but the tannins are firm, musuclar and hold things firmly in place, ensuring a sense of proportion. This walks the line, it is a big wine that absolutely delivers estate signature, and has a clear sense of future potential, with plenty of complexity. Rises to meet the vintage, not overpowered by it. Will age well.” 04/23
