Containing the largest Grand Cru in all of the Côte d’Or, Vougeot, the village, takes its name from the small stream flowing through it, called Vouge. Over three quarters of the village retains Grand Cru status, and a single vineyard at that: Clos de Vougeot (or simply, Clos Vougeot). Its mass—over 50 ha—retains the single name chiefly for historic reasons.
But today, Clos de Vougeot contains over 80 owners and shows significant soil and slope variations within its boundaries. The top, bordering Musigny and Grands Echezeaux, is calcareous and gravelly on oolitic limestone and exhibits wonderful drainage. The middle sections are limestone, gravel and clay with less of a slope. The lower part has little slant and is mostly made of clay. Historically the diverse parcels were blended but today the abundance of owners means that everyone has his own style. Exploring and understanding them is part of the allure of Clos de Vougeot.
In general a fine Clos de Vougeot when young will be dense and dark but juicy, with a pronounced austerity, and needs a good ten years to bring it to its full potential.
Offering up a deep bouquet of wild berries, cassis and plums mingled with grilled game, spices and woodsmoke, Domaine de la Vougeraie's 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and enveloping, its textural attack segueing into a voluminous mid-palate that's framed by ripe acids and velvety, almost melting tannins. While some bottle age will be rewarded, this is a very accessible Clos de Vougeot that's more about amplitude and finesse than overt structure.- William Kelley
The Boisset family’s Domaine de la Vougeraie owns just over a hectare of vines in Montiottes Hautes at the top of the slope on the northern edge of the Clos in addition to a smaller parcel in Baudes St. Martin next to Leroy. The oldest vines were planted just after WWII. In 2017, picking began on September 6th; nearly half of the fruit was fermented as whole bunches. The wine spent 16 months in cask, 37% new. The result is aromatic and floral on the initial attack. There is a fair bit of oak at this point but also a pleasant underlying red and blackberry fruit along with impressive freshness and length. (Drink between 2024-2039)
This too is quite firmly reduced and unreadable today. Otherwise there is a bit more size and weight to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess even better mid-palate density before terminating in a markedly complex, powerful and driving finish that displays the usual youthful austerity of a classic Clos de Vougeot. Very fine quality in a built-to-age package. - Allen Meadows
Two plots made apart then assembled before bottling. Racked before harvest. Lightish colour and somewhat restrained nose. 50% while bunch. While discreet up front there is a surge of lively red fruit on the palate and a very nicely judged finish with the stems doing their thing again. Gentle red fruit throughout, just a little more density at the back.
