Situated at the mid-point of the sloping vineyards of Saint Amour, the Domaine des Billards belongs to the Barbet and Teissier families. The soil is composed of sandstone pebbles underlying granite outcroppings at a depth of 50cm to 1m and beneath that layers of clay. Farming is very traditional and natural. There is no use of herbicides. The soil is regularly ploughed to develop the biodiversity. The traditional wine making process lasts between 12 to 15 days and the use of a weighted grill to keep the “crust” submerged in the fermenting juices leads to a more effective extraction of tannins. 6000 cases produced. 5.26 Hectares.
The 2022 Saint-Amour from Domaine des Billards is an absolutely beautiful example of this vintage. The wine’s bouquet is pure, complex and fairly red fruity in personality, hopping from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, pomegranate, sweet cranberries, gamebird, woodsmoke, a touch of whole clusters, a beautiful base of soil tones and a topnote of roses. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, tangy and structured in the style of the vintage, with a superb core of fruit, excellent soil signature and grip, well-integrated tannins and a long, vibrant and nascently complex finish. This wine comes in at 13.5 percent octane in this drought vintage and will demand some extended cellaring to blossom, but it is going to be an excellent wine once it is ready to drink and will be very long-lived in bottle. - John Gilman
