The Fleurie “Poncié” from Jean-Étienne Chermette is made from forty year-old vines these days, with this lieu à dit situated up in the steepest section of hillside vineyards in the commune. The wine is gorgeously classical in profile in 2021, coming in at a svelte thirteen percent alcohol and delivering a deep and refined aromatic constellation of dark berries, black cherries, fresh herb tones, gamebird, dark soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, young and seamless, with a fine core of black fruit, moderate tannins, lovely focus and grip and a long, complex and well-balanced finish that closes with a touch of youthful pepperiness still today. This is a fine bottle of Fleurie in the making that deserves a few years in the cellar to more completely blossom. It will be excellent once it is truly ready to drink. - John Gilman
