Some of the vines here are over 100 years old. Premier Cru quality!
This superb wine is made from vines planted between 60 and 90 years ago. When you read the Seguin website you feel the tremendous pride, even love they have for this wine made from their oldest holdings.
The estate in its current form is due to the passion and dedication of Gerard Seguin and his wife Chantal. They took over the reins in 1977. Their son, Jerome, is now doing much of the heavy lifting. The majority of their holdings are in Gevrey Chambertin. They own 2 vineyards to the north—in Marsannay and Fixin. Both are rightly regarded as extensions of Gevrey. The lieu dit in Chambolle—about 3-4 miles south of Gevrey is their only “southern” Cote de Nuits venture.
The Seguins destem the fruit after careful selection, give the best berries a brief cold soak and then allow about 18-20 days of maceration. The wines age in small barrels for about 18 months. The Seguins are not shy about new oak, employing 40-50% in their single site wines. They prefer the tight-grained Troncais to other oaks. To quote the Wine Frog, “ wine casks make from Troncais Oak are nicknamed "magic casks." Troncais Oak is a white oak with a very tight grain that is known to develop smooth tannins. I have never sensed the oak as such in their wines. All the Seguin wines taste of their origins. Robust, well balanced and full of dark fruit flavors they are among the best buys in Burgundy.
