I Greppi was founded on the Tuscan coast 2001 by two of Tuscany's most famous winemaking families, the Cancellieri and Landini. Although it was purchased by an investment group in 2017, Alessandro Landini, known for the production of Chianti, continues to serve as a consultant to the current owners.
The estate stretches over 14 hectares planted a stone's throw from the Tuscan coast in the spiritual homeland of the Super Tuscan movement. The farm's proximity to water creates the ideal conditions for extended ripening: Ventilation from the sea helps to cool the fruit during summer months and keep the grape bunches dry and healthy (free from mildew or rot).
Biodiversity among the vines is bolstered by the presence of two human-made lakes on the estate. Not only do they help to increase the presence of insects and other animals, but they also help to cool the vineyards in summer.
The Greppicaia Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of barrique-aged Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Merlot (20%). Its Greppicante is a blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Cabernet Franc (40%). Both wines are made in the classic Super Tuscan style, bold and rich in flavor and texture.
"Notes of dark cherries, plum skin, dark chocolate, black olives, dried orange peel and moist earth. Polished and refined on the palate, with a medium to full body. It’s vibrant and energetic, with some crunchiness and spiciness to its tannins. Lingering and nervy..."
"The 2021 Greppicaia includes a hefty dose of Petit Verdot, which lends richness and spice to the mix. Bold aromas of fresh red berries and some dried cherry introduce an intense and concentrated palate where the wood is currently in the front seat and the tannins have an overt, powdery texture. Creamy and peppery, there is nevertheless some succulent fruit lurking in the background and with time will emerge – the potential is certainly there in its long, fresh character and poised posture. Owned by Irish geologist, Dr Neil McMahon and his family since 2017, I Greppi has benefitted from his scientific approach, which includes a joint long-term research project with University of California, UC Davis, who also helped with the development of an on-site ’eno lab’."-James Button
