The Schneider family has been making wine in the famed Nahe village of Niederhäusen since 1575. Today the winery is run by Jakob Schneider Jr. who took over operations after graduating from Geisenheim and interning at Knoll in Austria’s Wachau.
Schneider’s wines maintain an old world charm while showcasing a stalwart minerality only derived from the amazing terroirs from which they hail.
A slightly sweet-tart but stimulatingly tangy amalgam of rhubarb and apple is fragrantly garlanded in lilac and laced with iodine and mouthwatering mineral salts for an intriguing and ultra-refreshing performance. The residual sugar here is hidden, but one of its effects is of course diminished alcohol, and there is a delightful sense of levity to this wine’s sustained finish. (Drink between 2018-2026)
From red and gray slate as well as volcanic soils, the 2016 Nahe Riesling Niederhäuser Kertz Feinherb is clear, fresh and slatey on the nose. On the palate, this is a gorgeously round and charming Riesling with perfectly ripe fruit and delicate acidity. The sweetness is truly moderate and just perfectly round, the aftertaste piquant and salty again. This is a racy picture book Riesling from the middle part of the Nahe region, and it sells for a very attractive price.
