Domaine Joseph Roty has been in the same family for twelve generations, since 1710, and has one of the largest followings of any Burgundian grower. ‘We keep faith with real Burgundy!' says Pierre-Jean who has been running the domaine for the last few years. Very old vines and a traditional approach in the vineyard and cellar create wines of remarkable character and depth. Everything is destemmed and they bottle without fining or
filtration, following the phases of the moon. The wines are capable of ageing for decades and develop the most wonderful aromas and complex flavours.
The very old vine Fontenys is very, very elegant in profile in 2019. The bouquet is deep, young and complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of sweet dark berries, cassis, smoked meats, a touch of licorice, a classy foundation of black minerality, woodsmoke, espresso and spicy oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very much defined by its underlying minerality, but with a beautiful core of sappy black fruit, fine-grained tannins and impeccable balance on the long, focused and very, very promising finish. Outstanding juice.
A solid dense sombre red purple. There is plenty of weight on the palate, dark fruit, quite a lot of oak take up, but really very long. Juicy, rich and exuberant with considerable length.
