Les Champs Libres - Bordeaux Blanc 2020

Les Champs Libres was born in 2013 from an impulsive idea that came from Julie and Baptiste Guinaudeau. This new cru is the fruit of long lasting experience combined with precision work in the white parcels at Grand Village.

In the past ten years they have applied an extremely qualitative approach both in the vineyard as in the cellar, investing much energy and time in the elaboration of these white wines.
In 2012, they kept apart two barrels of Sauvignon ”À Louima”, which showed exceptional aromatic complexity and were bottled separately. The resulting 240 bottles and 120 magnums were baptized as “À Louima 2012”. They represent the departure on a new adventure.

In 2013 they decided to blend the best barrels coming from three key Sauvignon parcels: À Louima, Les Pêchers and Les Acacias, to create Les Champs Libres 2013. A new parcel, Mathilde, joined in 2014 to complete this new cru.

Les Champs Libres Description

Focus, density and depth, and you feel the scale of this bone-dry white from chalky clay soils. Expect a slim frame and strong grip, hugging on to the end of the palate with its white peach, clean citrus, upward scraping slate texture. A delicious wine that isn't generous, but rewrites the script of white Bordeaux, and shows the ambition of Baptiste Guinaudeau of Château Lafleur. 100% aged in barrels, 100% Sancerre genetics for the Sauvignon Blanc. - 96 Points - Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Fruit of the shared passion which drives for more than 140 years the same family, the wines of Chateau Lafleur are crafted without any concession to fashion. Deep and complex, they are distinguished by the precision of their tannic structure and their legendry mineral character arising from this mythic terroir. The small surface and naturally low yields of the vineyard make Chateau Lafleur a very rare cru, reserved for great connoisseurs

Decanter: 98 Points

Matchstick on the nose, less overtly fruit, more clean, clear crisp - delicate with aromas of white flowers, white spices and white pepper. Power but purity, this has density and weight, instantly hitting the mouth and expanding outwards, layered and unctuous, rich and oily - there is some fatness but also lots of stony minerality. Starts of big and bright and full then narrows and settles and becomes more detailed - you get the nuance, the delineation comes through. Piercing acidity with gooseberry and apple, then lemon and orange followed a lingering spice on the tongue and cheeks. The nuance is beautiful. It’s a big wine, despite the acidity and the overall detail - it has weight and texture but it’s also so pure. A brilliant wine that you wouldn't necessarily put in Bordeaux but then gives you the Lafleur identity. orange, lychee, perfumed, peach, lemon. Wow. Just wow. Stunning wines. - Georgina Hindle, Decanter
