Les Couchereaux vineyard is situated on top of the slope, in the middle of the commune. This vineyard has a southern exposure. Soil is made of clay and calcareous. It is well drained and can warm up easily. The grapes bear small little dark red berries. The bunches are destemmed; they macerate in open vats during 4 weeks helping this subtle terroir to reveal itself. After devatting, the wines are aged in oak barrels during 18 months. AGING POTENTIAL 10 years and more, even 15/20 years.
Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.
Quite a contrast with Louis Jadot's Aux Cras bottling, this is altogether lighter, paler and more aromatic, despite facing due south. It's a fragrant, textured, finely balanced Beaune premier cru with a core of scented raspberry and red cherry sweetness and attractive vanilla oak.
2017: The Vintage Report (Côte de Beaune), 11/1/2018, (See more on Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy...)89-91 points
(Beaune Clos des Couchereaux 1er Cru, Les Héritiers Louis Jadot, Red) The clos is high up on a very steep south-facing slope, poor soil, low yields, very limestone. A little more strength of colour and deeper fruit, with raspberries overlying the cherries. A little more solid in its fruit base, raspberry notes with some acidity, very good persistence. Tasted: November 2018.
