Louis Jadot - Echezeaux 2016

The village of Flagey-Echezeaux is situated to the South of Vougeot, next to the famous château bordering its wall. The vineyards of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux, are entitled to use the Vosne-Romanée appellation.
The two Grands Crus Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux are situated on the slopes. The Echezeaux soil is chalky, which is perfect to make a beautiful Grand Cru. The vineyard is facing east/south-east. Destemmed grapes ferment in vats during 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes place in oak barrels produced by our cooperage Cadus during 18 months. AGING POTENTIAL 10 years and more, even 15/20 years.

Louis Jadot Description

Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.

Decanter: 94 Points

The Echezeaux, from the domaine’s vines in the excellent climat of Les Rouges du Bas, is normally a standout in the Jadot range, and 2016 does not disappoint despite the heavy frost experienced here. Notes of wood smoke, ripe cherry, rich soil and grilled game bird are followed by a full-bodied, expansive wine with elegant tannins, impressive breadth and good balancing acidity. This is quite giving in personality this year. (Drink between 2026-2040)

A View from the Cellar

The domaine’s holdings in Echézeaux hail from the lieu à dit of les Rouge du Bas and happily, there was no frost damage in this section of the vineyard in 2016. This too is an excellent wine in the making, offering up a fine bouquet of red and black cherries, venison, coffee, dark soil tones, bonfire, a touch of fresh herbs and a lovely framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite soil-driven in personality, with a good core, finegrained tannins and a long, tangy and youthful finish. This is an excellent wine and I may be underrating it just a tad, as it followed hard on the heels of the brilliant 2016 Clos St. Denis! 2028-2065+.

Vinous

(50% of a normal crop, from vines in Les Rouges du Bas): Bright full red. Aromas of raspberry, flint, menthol and licorice are lifted by a floral topnote. Very concentrated, tightly wound wine with terrific cut and herbal/mineral lift. Conveys an almost late-harvest dried-fruit nuance but at the same time penetrating and not particularly fleshy, showing a minty quality. Best today on the floral, slowly rising finish, which features firm but very suave tannins. This grand cru is going to take a long time to reach full maturity. (Jadot did not make a Grands-Echézeaux in 2016.) (ST)
