The village of Flagey-Echezeaux is situated to the South of Vougeot, next to the famous château bordering its wall. The vineyards of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux, are entitled to use the Vosne-Romanée appellation.
The two Grands Crus Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux are situated on the slopes. The Echezeaux soil is chalky, which is perfect to make a beautiful Grand Cru. The vineyard is facing east/south-east. Destemmed grapes ferment in vats during 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes place in oak barrels produced by our cooperage Cadus during 18 months. AGING POTENTIAL 10 years and more, even 15/20 years.
The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from Les Rouges du Bas, has a far more complex bouquet compared to the Clos de Vougeot; marmalade and dried quince scents infuse the exotic red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red berry fruit on the entry, laced with orange peel and touches of tobacco. I admire the density of this Echézeaux - not the most nuanced one produced in 2017, but it has plenty of substance and aging potential. This should be interesting in 10 years’ time.
