This clos is not far from the village of Pernand, on calcareous, stony soil, facing east. The Croix de Pierre is a large stone cross at the entrance to the vineyard. Most of the vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir. The fruit is fermented in tanks, and then the wine is matured in oak barrels for about 15 months before bottling.
The commune of Pernand-Vergelesses is located between Aloxe Corton and Savigny-Les-Beaune, to the North of the Côte de Beaune. It is partly East, South and West oriented. The altitude of the vineyards varies from 260 and 380 meters. « Clos de la Croix de Pierre » is situated on the « En Caradeux » area. The vineyard is facing East, not very far from the village. Soil is made of limestone and small stones on the surface.
Its name comes from a big cross made of stone at the entrance of the vineyard. Grapes are harvested by hand and put in small cases in order not to damage the fruits. Grapes are pressed softly, they ferment in oak barrels produced by our cooperage. 1/3 are new barrels. Aging usually lasts 15 months on fine lies before bottling. AGING POTENTIAL 5 to 10 years, depending on the vintage.
Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.
Round and expressive, the 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Clos de la Croix de Pierre Blanc (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) delivers aromas of buttered orchard fruit, ripe citrus, vanilla pod, white flowers and mint. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's one of the most immediate, giving wines in the range.
More yellow in the colour and with a reduction on the nose. Pale primrose. Some liquorice notes, I wouldn’t want this to be any riper, everything is so concentrated here. Plenty happening! Give it a year or three to calm down and then there should be some lovely wine.
