Meo Camuzet - Fixin Clos du Chapitre 1er Cru 2020

Meo Camuzet Description

Méo-Camuzet is one of the most celebrated domaines of the Côte d’Or, located in the heart of prestigious Vosne-Romanée. The domaine boasts fourteen hectares of land in some of the most spectacular appellations and crus of Burgundy. The vineyard land in Burgundy is highly parceled out among families, which makes it rare for anyone to have enough vines to be able to bottle one grand cru, let alone the six that the Méos have. The early beginnings of the domaine left it in the hands of share-croppers. The last twenty years have brought substantial changes that have fostered a new chapter for the Méo family.

Vinous: 90-92 Points

The 2020 Fixin Clos du Chapitre 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet that delivers commendable mineralité, quite precise and focused. The palate is smooth and very pliant, vivacious and slightly tart red fruit with just a touch of spice developing on the finish. This is a delight. (NM)

A View from the Cellar: 90 Points

I always like Jean-Nicolas’ example of Clos Chapitre and the 2020 is another fine bottle. This has the aromatic precision one expects from premier cru, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, bitter chocolate, grilled venison, a lovely base of dark soil tones, bonfire and a touch of oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and tangy, with a fine core, lovely soil signature, ripe, seamless tannins and a long, tangy and youthful finish. This will need some bottle age to blossom, but it is going to be a good value.

Inside Burgundy: 90-93 Points

Black centre with purple rim. Jean-Nicolas finds this both upright and gourmand, a combination he likes. Flirts with 14% and stays on side. Super ripe cherries as part of the nose, kicks on really well on the palate with this high acidity which brings out the red fruit notes in fruit which otherwise wants to be richer. Long finish, and in the end the balance works well. Will need time.

Wine Advocate: 89-91 Points

The 2020 Fixin 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre (Méo-Camuzet Frère & Soeurs) has turned out nicely, exhibiting aromas of cassis, plums and woodsmoke, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's bright and vibrant, with ripe tannins and a penetrating finish. Jean-Nicolas Méo began his harvest on August 23, and he has produced another fine vintage at this Vosne-Romanée reference point. Méo has always done well in warm, sunny vintages (as a lovely bottle of his 2003 Nuits Lavières recently reminded me), and 2020 is no exception. Indeed, for a vintage that was generally somewhat primary and frequently tightly wound this winter, Méo's wines—habitually quite backward after 12 months' élevage—were remarkably put together and expressive. Mostly landing at around 13.5% alcohol, they're vibrant, concentrated and nicely balanced, showing considerable aging potential. (WK)
