On 1.9 ha of steep slopes we grow only Riesling and produce about 20,000 wines annually. The distinctive flavour of our wines owes itself to the weathered slate soil as well as to the intricacies of the site Ürziger Würzgarten. Built with local slate, our historic house was bought by our great-grandfather in 1867. Part of our vineyard is still planted with vines on their original rootstock. Our wines are mainly vinified in traditional wooden casks. Noble sweet Auslesen are our speciality.
Reflecting marginally higher acidity and extract than the A.P. #1, but picked in the same parcel just a day later, this bottling displays a surprisingly different personality. It leads with fermentative notes oddly but not unpleasantly reminiscent of sesame and peanut oils. There is the merest hint of floral perfume by way of apple blossom, but nothing reminiscent of A.P. #1’s honeysuckle profusion. Scents and flavors here are dominantly of lightly baked apple; the feel is glossy but with an underlying sense of firmness; and the juicy finish is transparent to slate as well as encouragingly sprinkled with salt. I suspect that this wine may merely need some time to show its full potential. (Drink between 2019-2026)
