Supple and fruity with red fruit aromas and flavors. The vines are 40 years old; they are pruned quite extensively to limit the yield; all the bunches are picked by hand and then very carefully sorted to retain only the fully ripe, whole bunches.
Michel Guignier is a fourth generation vigneron in Villié Morgon, in the heart of the AOC Morgon appellation in Beaujolais. Following in the footsteps of the famed “Gang of Four” in Morgon, Guignier is committed to producing wines in the most natural way possible in order to both protect the environment and create wines that are alive and transmit a sense of place. As such, grapes are picked entirely by hand and rigorous sorting is done both in the vineyard and in the cellar before the grapes go into cement vats for vinification. Guignier follows a traditional vinification “à la Beaujolaise” with no de-stemming and with only indigenous yeasts used for the fermentation.
"The 2022 Beaujolais from Michel Guignier is outstanding and, once again, a great value. Readers may recall that these vines lie just outside of the communal border of Morgon and are now more than fifty years of age, so Monsieur Guignier has excellent raw materials with which to work. The 2022 version offers up a deep and vibrant bouquet of black cherries, sweet dark berries, just a hint of cranberry, bonfire, pigeon, dark soil tones, fresh thyme and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and modestly tannic, with a superb core of pure fruit, lovely soil inflection, good focus and grip and a long, complex and very nicely balanced finish. Like many of the best examples of Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages in 2022, it would not be a crime to tuck this wine away in the cellar for a couple of years and let its underlying tannins soften up a bit more."-John Gilman
Sun-kissed red raspberry and fresh red cherry open on the nose followed by bruised strawberry, cranberry and violet blossom. A slightly-chalky palate gives concentrated fruit and velvety tannins along with a suggestion of cherry cola. This is a solid Beaujolais that would pair well with grilled chicken, carnitas tacos and rosemary baked potatoes. – Reggie Solomon, Wine Enthusiast
