Paolo Scavino - Barolo 2019

#78 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2023

This Barolo represents the history and tradition of blending different crus of Nebbiolo in order to create a house style. The same care and quality work are employed on this wine as for all of the cru Barolo. This wine is an opportunity for many clients to enjoy a great Barolo with an exceptional price quality ratio.

Sourced from the top performing plots of 7 single vineyards in the village of Castiglione Falletto (Rocche Moriondino, Vignolo and Pernanno vineyards), Barolo (Albarella, Terlo and Vignane vineyards) and Serralunga d’Alba (San Bernardo vineyard). Maceration and alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts; Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. Aged in neutral French oak barrels for 10 months and further 12 months in large casks. Finishes one year in stainless steel and 10 months in bottle.

Paolo Scavino Description

Paolo Scavino winery was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto from Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family Estate. Through 70 years of work, Enrico Scavino has researched and purchased some of the most historic vineyards cultivated with Nebbiolo for Barolo to experience and show the uniqueness of each site.

The Scavino family owns 30 hectares entirely in the Barolo area and vinifies grapes from their own vineyards located in the villages of Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno, Roddi and Monforte d’Alba.

The approach to both viticulture and winemaking is scrupulous, respectful and is aimed at preserving and therefore enhancing the expression and peculiarities of each vineyard in the wines.

Kerin O'Keefe: 96 Points

“Absolutely gorgeous, the 2019 Barolo from Paolo Scavino stuns with its fragrance of perfumed berry, dark spice, Alpine herb and dog rose. One of best entry level Barolos from the vintage, it’s focused, vibrant and savory, delivering crushed mint, star anise, cranberry, red cherry and blood orange. Elegant and taut, it boasts polished tannins while bright acidity imparts vibrancy and tension. Drink 2027–2039."-Kerin O'Keefe

James Suckling: 95 Points

The fresh flowers, like roses, really come through here. Perfumed. Sliced strawberry and citrus. Full-bodied with linear and tight tannins. Bright acidity gives it drive and focus. Give it four or five years to soften and come together.
