A nicely toasty Champagne, with lots of smoke, brioche, lemon peel, honey, dried apricot and roasted nut flavors. Firm acidity provides a lovely freshness and framework, and it's seamlessly integrated with the flavors and refined texture. Features more nut and smoke notes on the long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2024. 150 cases imported.

The 1999 Rare is a medium-bodied, focused offering redolent of flowers, pears and green apples. Here, too, the wine is well- made and offers good definition but not the detail or complexity of its peers at this price point. Piper-Heidsieck? Rare is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This bottle was disgorged in December, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012.
