In 2012, Rodrigo Mendez started his own wine project, naming it after himself. He wanted to make wines that truly capture the spirit of Galicia's Rías Baixas region in Spain, using natural farming methods that work with nature rather than against it.
Drawing from his family's winemaking history and lessons learned from his grandfather, Rodrigo keeps things simple and lets the land speak for itself. He uses time-honored winemaking methods to create wines that can age beautifully and tell the story of the local soils and climate.
His small winery sits in Meaño, Pontevedra, where he makes very small amounts of wine each year. He combines modern stainless steel tanks with traditional oak barrels to bring out the best qualities of his grapes. For his wine "O Raio da Vella," he hand-picks grapes from younger vineyards and produces fewer than 2,000 bottles annually.
There is a smoky and leesy twist in the 2023 O Raio da Vella, which fermented and matured in a 2,500-liter oak foudre for 12 months. It has a combination of freshly cut grass, white fruit and flowers and a faint twist from the sea, with a gentle and round palate with a dry, slightly chalky texture. 3,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.
