Clos de la Roilette Fleurie is 100% Gamay from vines around 40 years old and up, planted on heavy clay soils with relatively little granite and quite a bit of the iron-like mineral manganese. The farming is sustainable with all vineyard work done by hand. Soils are worked only superficially, at most twice per year, to protect the roots of the older vines.
Vinification is traditional semi-carbonic Beaujolais style. Whole clusters are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in open-top concrete tanks. Maceration lasts around 14 days with a submerged cap rather than punchdowns. Sulfur use is minimal. The wine is aged in large, old oak foudres for about nine months before bottling.
This is Beaujolais made with respect for tradition and terroir – hands-off winemaking that lets the vineyard express itself without interference. The heavy clay soils and manganese contribute to the wine's depth and structure, producing Fleurie that's more serious and age-worthy than the bright, fruity style most people associate with the appellation.
